The Michigan House — DeLand, Florida
Standing proudly for one hundred years at the heart of DeLand's historic hub, The Michigan House has always been more than just a home.
Built in 1925, directly across from the Henry A. DeLand House Museum and just steps from the Stetson University campus, it was part of a lively neighborhood where professors, students, travelers, and townspeople naturally crossed paths. Its tall windows, broad front porch, and generous interiors reflect an era when gracious homes welcomed boarders, roomers, and long-term guests.
Located on West Michigan Avenue within the West DeLand Residential District — listed on the National Register of Historic Places — the house sits at a historic crossroads of campus, community, and commerce, just moments from DeLand's award-winning Main Street.
Architecturally, The Michigan House reflects the spirit of 1920s Florida, blending the handcrafted warmth of the American Craftsman tradition with the grace of Colonial Revival design. Its porch and vintage details give it timeless character, while a thoughtful renovation restores its charm and introduces modern comfort.
When the house first opened its doors, it was more than a place to stay. Residents gathered around the dining table, warmed themselves by the fire, and shared in the rhythm of daily life.
Now, in its second century, the home begins a new chapter. Thoughtfully reimagined as five distinctive residences, The Michigan House retains its original soul — refinished heart pine floors, soaring ceilings, restored cabinetry — while embracing a fresh, livable design sensibility. Each residence offers its own character, blending historic detail with curated, modern interiors.
The Michigan House is not only a dwelling, but a reflection of DeLand's past and present — rooted in tradition, shaped by community, and alive with possibility for those who will call it home.
The primary entrance to The Michigan House is through the welcoming front porch and original front door. From the foyer, the first floor opens immediately to The Heritage and The Grove, while a restored staircase leads to the second floor.
At the top of the stairs, a long, gallery-like hallway creates a truly memorable arrival experience. The staircase itself features custom tile risers, while the original heart pine floors continue throughout the hallway, glowing with warmth and history. Along the corridor, curated artwork, a live-edge console table, and a striking 1920s mirror create a refined visual rhythm. At one end, a series of round "portal" mirrors — reminiscent of champagne bubbles — add a distinctive architectural moment. At the other, a sculptural olive tree provides a soft and natural focal point.
This space feels less like a corridor and more like a boutique hotel gallery — setting the tone for the residences beyond.
Along the right side of the property, a once utilitarian drive has been thoughtfully reimagined as a park-like outdoor space known as The Shady Side.
Framed by mature trees and layered greenery, this long, shaded lawn creates a natural retreat that extends from the street to the rear of the property, offering a sense of privacy within a shared setting.
Designed as a private park for residents of The Michigan House, The Shady Side offers a quiet place to step outside — whether for morning coffee beneath the trees, an informal gathering around the picnic table, or an evening meal at the grill.
Both visible from above and experienced at ground level, the space adds a sense of openness and calm to daily living, softening the edges of the property and creating a connection to nature throughout the day.
